Alternatives
Splitwise alternatives, and when you do not need one.
Two of the options below are the same app without the ads. The third is a different idea.

The shortlist
Three, and one of them is probably enough.
If all you need is who owes whom on a trip, stop at the first two.
| What it is | Price | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| tricountOwned by bunq | The closest like-for-like: a shared list, a link to invite, everyone adds their own | Free | It is a scoreboard, not a budget. Owned by a bank, if that matters to you |
| Settle UpIndependent | The same job, with the settling worked out into as few payments as possible | Free | Smaller, plainer, and the same limit: shared expenses and nothing else |
| OrlaThis site | The split inside a ledger, so settling up is a payment against a budget | Free plan with no time limit; paid from $25 a month | Everyone signs up, which is a lot to ask for one weekend away |
When to stay put
A one week trip does not need a migration.
Its real advantage is that the other five people already have it.
- →Everyone installed, one message, done. Moving a group is the expensive part, not the app
- →If the ads are the only problem, their paid tier removes them, and the free alternatives above remove them for nothing
- →Nobody in the group has to connect a bank to any of the first two, and they should not have to
When the split is not the problem
The shared flat, month after month.
A scoreboard works until the sharing is permanent.
- →The rent, the bills and your own groceries live in one budget, and your share of each is already counted
- →Settling up is recorded as a real payment against the right category, so the month closes properly
- →An expense arrives from a connected account instead of being typed in twice, once in your budget and once in the scoreboard
- →The same book holds the salary the rent comes out of

If tricount or Settle Up is enough for you, take it. Being told the truth is worth more than being sold to.
