Why a custom app instead of connecting with Shopify?

What happens if my shop does not use Shopify Payments?
The connection stays healthy and syncs nothing. There is simply no payments ledger to read, and saying so is more useful than an error that looks like a broken integration.
What exactly comes across?
The payments ledger: sales rolled up by day, Shopify Payments fees as their own figure, refunds against their day, the balance still held and the payouts sent to your bank.
